Celebrating the Fourth of July is a great time to reflect on the freedom we have as Americans and Christians. Our national freedom is a priceless gift bought by the sacrifices of many men, women, and children, but there is another freedom we celebrate- the freedom of eternal life that we are granted through a relationship with God our Father.

2 Corinthians 3: 17 says, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

As Christians we can seek to find freedom through the temptation to trust things such as relationships, status, money, good works, associations etc. But the true freedom is found when we surrender the driving need for THOSE things to rule our lives over to the Living God. When we do this, we allow the Spirit of God to dwell deep within us and lead us into a relationship with Him. It is then, that we are truly set free.

As you go about your red, white and blue celebrations, take some time to reflect on what or who you are trusting in. Where is your true freedom found?

My hope is that the “declaration of independence” of freedom in the living God will be on your lips and in your heart this Fourth of July season and that you are truly set free!
