My big sister is a ‘can do’ kinda gal that believes in working smarter instead of harder. Not that she’s afraid of work, she just wants things done right. Most of the time she has a better way of doing something or fixing something that you only find out about if you spend a little time with her.

Since we’ve recently moved back to our hometown, I’m getting to really know this sister for the first time as adults…and I like her. Not because she brings me tomatoes and cucumbers from her garden but because she’s kind.

She’s five foot nothin’ and married for life to her 6’5″ sweetheart. They met on a blind date when I was still in middle school. (I liked his car!)

Recently she shared this recipe for homemade laundry soap with me and I thought I’d give it a try. She sent me home with a few scoops in a pint jar to see if it worked well for me too.

It does. She wouldn’t use it if it didn’t.

Here’s the recipe in case you want to try it too.

4 lb, 12 oz box Borax
4 lb box Baking Soda
55 oz box Washing Soda
3 bars Fels Naptha
3.5 lb tub Oxy Clean (keep the blue scoop)
2 small bottles Downy Unstoppables or 1 big one

Directions:

Microwave Fell Naptha bars for 30 seconds and cut up. Grind them up – one bar at a time – in a blender or food processor. Dump all ingredients in a heavy trash bag and mix thoroughly. Store in 2- 5 quart ice cream buckets.

1 Oxy Clean scoop per load

Cost: ~ $40 (my sister says it lasts a whole year for two people)
