On Your Way!
Gosh. Would you look at that girl? Ready to go! “OUT,” she says, to explore the world! Or at least the basket of golf balls in the garage. “OUT,” to the neighbor dog in the backyard. “OUT,” to the water table in the front yard. (For about 5 minutes until we’re back to the golf balls and watering cans in the garage!)
There is determination in those tippy toes! “If I could just figure out this doorknob…” she must be thinking.
A day in the life of a toddler is busy! Her number one job is Play followed shortly by Making Messes, aka More Work for Mommy. At the local library she can pull out books faster than I can put them away! In the kitchen our pantry is full of things to knock over or dump out.
There’s so much joy in the exploration. And so little fear. She will confidently stand at the top of her Little Tikes slide, hands in the air, and look over at me with the “Am I supposed to be doing this?” grin on her face. So brave! On a walk she’ll reach her arms out for a hug from any dog. A little fear might do her some good, I think. But I suppose the fear will come soon enough. There will be plenty of things in life to knock her down and crowd out some of that confidence. So for now I say, “Go for it little girl. Reach up up up on those tippy toes.” It makes me think of the Dr. Seuss book, Oh the Places You’ll Go.
“… you’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So… get on your way!”
